When I was in college, I would take summer classes in my university in the Philippines called Ateneo de Manila University. Being a 150 year old university, it is full of history and atmosphere.
During the summer, the girls would move into the third floor of the boys’ dorm called Cervini Hall. So it was there that my friends Kat, Michelle and I spent our summer. I remember clearly that we were in room 304.
As previously stated, the Ateneo is an old school and it was used as prison camp during World War II. In any case, we’ve already heard many ghost stories from many people in campus. But none of us had really come close to experiencing any. Until that summer. It was the summer before we became juniors or seniors. If I recall it was the summer that Aladdin came out in the cinemas.
Anyway, we had heard rumors that our room, was quite the infamous room. Many people have told us that there were ghosts in that room. But again at first none of us felt anything. In any case, the entire Cervini Hall was rumored to be haunted, so we didn’t think much of it.
However, after a few days of being in the room, we started experiencing strange things. First of all we would notice that even when we left our door unlocked, when any of us would come back, we would find it locked. Our rooms door did not have a lock that you latched or pressed or chained. It was one of those old fashioned doors that you had to lock with a key from the inside to lock it. Because of this, whenever someone was inside we roomies had a habit of leaving it unlocked. However the next person to come in would still find it locked.
The next incident involved Michelle. Before I describe this incident, let me describe the walls that framed our door. Basically the walls where made of wood and screen. The walls were actually windows with wood jalousies. The jalousies on the lower half of our door would not close and since it was not during the summer both Kat and Michelle made it a point to leave the lower jalousies open throughout the day and through the night.
One night, Michelle sat in her table, studying for a French exam, when suddenly out of the blue, she bolted out of her seat without warning and without a word to Kat or me, she went out of the room. The way she exited was so abrupt that Kat and I immediately asked her what happened when she returned.
She then narrated that she studied and stared into the jalousies below, she had seen someone in a very long white gown walking very slowly. Of course since it was only the lower part open, she had not seen the face. This slow walking paired with the long gown intrigued her and she raced out to see who it was. But she told us that when she got to the hall, whoever it was would have been at most at the next room, but no one was there. She said that she even knocked the next two rooms to see if anyone had seen the figure or if anyone was wearing a floor length white nightgown but there wasn’t anyone. After hearing that we all shivered and said a prayer.
The third and last experience in that room was perhaps the most frightening. This time it involved Michelle and I. Before I go on, it is imperative that I describe how our room was laid out. Basically there were four roommates and four beds. Our fourth roomie was a summer only student and we didn’t know her. Today, I don’t even recall what she looks like or her name. All I know is that she went to Assumption College, an all girls school and she was only in the Ateneo to take summer classes.
In any case, Michelle and I had beds next to each other there was a closet in between our beds and beside our beds, on the opposite side of the closet was our tables. My bed was near the balcony and Michelle’s was near the hallway.
In front of Michelle was Kat and in front of me was summer school roomie. On the night I am talking about, I had my vanity mirror in front of me and I was experimenting with my curling iron. Michelle was also still awake on the opposite side, while Kat was already asleep. The summer roomie was still up as well. As I experimented with my hair I could see my summer roomie from the mirror. I saw her, back turned to me, seated on a chair and seeming to be reading a letter. I didn’t really pay any attention to her. However a few moments later, I heard sniffling, like someone was crying, but trying to keep it quiet. I looked at the mirror and my roomie was still there reading and I surmised that it was her crying. I thought, hmmm…maybe I should say something. But then I thought, leave her alone, Jo you barely know her. So I paid heed to my latter thought and continued with my hair. A few minutes later I got tired of ironing my hair and decided to pack it in. As I finished brushing out the curls, I saw that my new roomie had not moved from the chair from what I saw in the mirror. As I finished, I stood up turned and what do I see, my roomie sound asleep in her bed!
I looked up in horror and looked at Michelle and Michelle suddenly says, “I saw her too!” At that I jumped out of my bed and went to where Michelle was. I told her, “OMG, I thought it was our new roomie the entire time!” Michelle then tells me, “No she went to sleep a few minutes after Kat!”
So that entire time, the girl I had been seeing in the mirror was a ghost! I was so freaked. Later on, I went back to where my bed was and I saw that my bed looked like it had been pulled – there was a space between the bed and the wall. It did not look like it had been made during my run out of there since the space was uniform – it was not diagonal like someone kicked it. It looked like it had been pulled.
The night, Michelle and I slept in the same bed. The next day Kat woke up to the two of us in one bed and asked us what happened. We told her the story and from the day forward we decided that we would pray for all the souls every night before going to bed. And we did exactly that. After that, none of us experienced anything more until summer school ended.
